Professional projects

It's been a year since I left my startup, and I'm now actively looking for new opportunities. The job market for software engineers has changed dramatically in that time, and I'm excited to see how the profession will change and where it will take me.

On the side, I'm setting up setting up a small website for my local landowners' association. I went with Wordpress, so that whatever we build is easily transferrable to someone else. I expected to see a lot of changes since last I touched the LAMP stack, but from what I can tell, it's still the same old Wordpress. Not very enjoyable to work with, but at least it's nice to be helping out in the local community.

Tech

Considering adopting a new editor: Zed. I can count on a single hand how many times I've switched editors. It's a huge commitment and a lot of muscle memory to unlearn and re-train, but I'm seeing a lot of positive signals it might be worth the effort.

Experimenting with Pi, a minimal agent harness. Trying to run local large language models with my RX 7900 XT, with limited success so far, despite seeing claims online that local models are good now.

Outdoors

Tested my kitesurfing gear earlier this summer and it survived the winter. Hope to get some good sessions in this season. Focusing on upwind riding with the goal of being able to ride and return to the same spot without walking.

I will try to spread my Vindkast app around among kitesurfers I meet this summer, and see if it can gain some traction.

Looking to buy skiing equipment at summer prices, in preparation for my son's first introduction to skiing and snowboarding this winter.

Home & Family

Aiming to finally get the house painted this summer.

I'd also like to put up a small fence to keep the kids from running into the street. It will involve drilling into brick walls, so it will likely be a learning experience—I just hope not a too expensive one.

Trying to prepare my son to become a big brother. How can you prepare someone else, when you're not really prepared yourself?

Gaming

I've been playing Valheim for some weeks now. The great thing about Valheim is that it's enjoyable both alone and with friends. If you're alone, you still play on a shared server where you can gather resources, tend to the garden, do some construction, prepare meals and other resources which will help everyone out later. Then, when your friends finally join, you gear up and go out to explore and raid together. This flexibility makes it suitable for our phase of life where kids, wives and work make for a busy schedule and limited overlapping playtime. It's been a great way to reconnect and spend some time with old friends back in Norway.

Another friend who has countless hours in Minecraft said that I'm essentially having "the Minecraft experience", so I guess this means I finally got around to play that, just in viking form.

Movies & TV

Me and my wife recently discovered Rivals and we're thoroughly enjoying it. What a hidden gem with its hilarious, over-the-top satire.

I'm also re-watching the first season of The Wire for the nth time. I just can't help myself. It might simply be the best TV series of them all.
